Downtown Mall - Vacancy Problems

The Hook has an interesting short piece about the increasing number of vacancies on the Mall.

I have been noticing this more and more over the past year. The area around the old A&N is the starkest, but the block around the Hardware Store also seems to be increasingly problematic. Coincidentally (and left unmentioned in The Hook's piece), Gravity Lounge has just announced it may shut down in the near future because of cash flow problems (article is in today's Progress, here).

AND, the new Hook also has a piece (here) that says construction on the Landmark Hotel is basically at a standstill.

28. Is anyone on City Council having second thoughts, yet, about the re-bricking project? Some of the middle portion (just east of the CVS) appears to be close-to-finished, and it looks as sterile and uninspiring as anticipated.

29. Did C'Ville Tomorrow express any opinion about the re-bricking before it got started?

30. How is business at The Paramount? The events I've gone to have been fairly well-attended, but is their business drying up at all with the recession?

31. The guy that was running the newsstand outside of the Regal Cinema for approximately 1 year (around 2005) -- where did he end up going? Did he stay in Charlottesville? Other than having the wrong selection of magazines, why didn't that business work out better?

32. Is the CVS on the Corner owned by the same person as the one on the Mall? Are they franchised or company-owned?
