Michigan State Beats the Defending Champs

Ever since we watched Michigan State during the first two rounds of the 2001 tourney (we'd gone to Memphis to watch UVa's heartbreaking loss to Gonzaga), I've semi-followed the Spartans, particularly during tournament time. This probably has to do with Dad's enduring appreciation (and re-telling of the story!) of their fan-base, stemming from our fun conversations with a number of fans as we were staying in the team hotel in Memphis.

Last night most of the Sweet Sixteen games were blowouts (Gonzaga got crushed by Carolina), but the Michigan State vs. Kansas game looked like a classic (I watched the highlights and read about it this morning). Here is Pat Forde's summary of the last three minutes (at ESPN, here):

How Spartanesque were the final three minutes? Consider what transpired from 60-55 onward:

  • Michigan State grabbed seven straight rebounds.
  • Michigan State held Kansas without a field goal.
  • Michigan State made two steals.
  • Michigan State's best player, Kalin Lucas, made a spectacular three-point play.
  • Michigan State made six of its final seven free throws.
  • Michigan State won 67-62.

The highlights were equally impressive (Kansas led by 13 at one point). I think Tom Izzo is one of those coaches, like Belichick, whose ability to win consistently in the postseason shows he's a cut-above the rest.
