The Extension of Hillsdale Drive

At Monday night's meeting the City Council voted unanimously to allocate $2.1 from the Strategic Investment Account towards construction of Hillsdale Drive Extended. Rachana Dixit of the Progress has the story here.

Dixit points out that this is the largest expenditure from the Strategic Investment Account since 2004, when $3.6 million was allocated for the Pavilion.

When finished, Hillsdale Drive will extend from Hydraulic Road through Seminole Square and up to the current portion of the road. The total cost is estimated at $30 million, much of which will stem from the need to purchase rights of way from property owners along the road's path.

David Brown said at Monday's meeting that the Southern Environmental Law Center has come out in support of the Hillsdale extension -- I am a bit surprised on that point; even if the new road alleviates congestion on Route 29, won't it lead to an increase in the overall amount of traffic? Maybe the new road is going to have better biking and walking paths alongside?
