Charlottesville's Landmark Hotel - The Saga Heads to the Courts

Brian McNeill reports in yesterday's Daily Progress that Halsey Minor has filed suit against Lee Danielson and lender Specialty Financing Group, alleging fraud, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty in connection with Minor's investment in the Landmark Hotel project.

McNeill's article is quite comprehensive in spelling out the details of the suit and setting forth the background of the project.

I hope that the Progress can give McNeill (or another reporter) the time and leeway to continue reporting in-depth on the hotel (and, now, the lawsuit), because this is a story could significantly affect the direction in which downtown C'Ville goes during the next few years.

Somewhat incredibly (though I guess not all that surprisingly, given the past willingness of the principals in this dispute to argue with each other through quotes in the media), Danielson responds 'on-the-record' to the lawsuit with a number of colorful quotes, including:
  • “This is just more Halsey Minor ... Lob hand grenades. Blow everybody up. Create confusion.”
  • "He’s not really a guy’s guy [I cannot believe he said this for the record] , but I thought he was the right person because of his background, the fact that he’s from Charlottesville and the fact that he’s sophisticated, well, supposedly sophisticated."
  • "We could have salvaged this thing very easily in September or October ... Halsey didn’t want to hear it. He just turned his back."
