The Redskins' Bizarre Habit of Paying Too Much for Free Agents

The Redskins signed Albert Haynesworth to a 7-year, $115 million contract on Friday.

Haynesworth, a defensive tackle, went to the University of Tennessee and has played for the Titans for the past seven years.

He has had a history of anger management issues:
He was suspended for an NFL-record five games in 2006 for an incident in which he stomped on the head of Dallas Cowboys center Andre Gurode during a game. After he knocked off Gurode's helmet, Haynesworth then kicked and stomped on Gurode's face, leading to Gurode receiving 30 stitches to close the gashes opened by Haynesworth's cleats ... During his sophomore season with the Volunteers, Haynesworth fought with a teammate, left practice and came back carrying a long pole as he sought out tackle Will Ofenheusle. Phillip Fulmer, the Volunteers' coach at the time, stopped Haynesworth. In training camp with the Titans in 2003, Haynesworth reportedly kicked center Justin Hartwig in the chest during an altercation at practice.
$41 million of Haynesworth's salary is guaranteed, and $31 million of that amount is during the first 13 months.

105. Why, why, why do the Redskins (specifically, Snyder and Cerrato, but now Jim Zorn as well) continue to do this - the ridiculous signing (always with enormous contracts) of stars, rather than working through the draft and raising players to be part of a team, over time, the way that successful teams approach player development?

106. Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, Dana Stubblefield, the Eagles' linebacker, the list just goes on and on -- have any of the big free agent signings worked since Snyder bought the team?
